Software

Pointers to ballistics software available on the web (and elsewhere). I have not used most of these programs, so I am not attempting to review or even recommend any of them. This page is meant to be a central place for people to find what is available. If you have or know of any other software that is not listed here, please let me know. Dead links are removed from time to time -- usually if Google cannot find them anymore.

Programs are listed alphabetically by name in two sections. The first section, Programs lists those commercial and free programs that I currently know about. The second section, Web Based, lists web based calculation programs.

• Al_Bal
  Windows based ballistics program for small arms and airguns. Nice Windows installer. Free.
• Balcal 6.2
  Windows ballistics program written in Visual Basic. Has a lot of features (like many of the programs here). Price is $49.95 on a CD.
• Ballistic
  Ballistic is a fast, highly-accurate ballistic trajectory calculator and range companion for the iPhone. Currently $3.99 US.
• Ballistic_XLR
  A modified Pejsa model implemented in a spreadsheet. Free.
• Ballistic Explorer by Oehler Research
  External ballistics programs for DOS and Windows with demo. $60-$70.
• Ballistik Pro 1.1
  A shareware ballistics program by Helge Peters for Apple/Mac. The program containes 8 different functions for sport shooters, hunters and reloaders. The price is $20.00 US.
• Barnes Ballistics for Windows
  Barnes' Windows based ballistics program, version 2. Runs on Windows '95 or higher. Price is $49.95 ($19.95 upgrade is available).
• Chrony Ballistics II Software
  Exterior ballistics program from Shooting Chrony Inc. $19.95 to $54.95. Used to be PC/Bullet.
• EB4 (Exterior Ballistics 4)
  A DOS based program from R. Nennstiel. This program uses a modified point mass trajectory and is capable of doing simulations. There is now a demo version available for download Price is 300 DM (about $180 US).
• Exbal
  Windows based ballistics program. Also has a program for the Palm Pilot. From $30, accepts Pay-Pal.
• Field Firing Solutions
  PDA software. Prices start at $395.
• Hornady Reloader for Windows
  I found a reference to some Windows software at the Hornady site, but it seemed to be the reloading manuals on disk. I have found their ballistics program at Midway. Midway price is $31.99 (June 1997).
• Horus Vision
  A number of software packages for PDAs. They also sell rifle scopes to use with their software.
• iSnipe
  iPhone app. Price is $14.99.
• KAC Bullet Flight
  'Knight's Armament BulletFlight is a military-grade ballistic computer that provides quick solutions in the field.' Software for the iPhone and iPod.
• Keystone Enhanced Ballistics System
  Exterior (there is an interior ballistics program available) Ballistics program for DOS. $12.95. Demo available for download.
• Modern Ballistics
  Currently in beta. Cost is $45 for the first year and $10/year thereafter, including free upgrades.
• Nightforce Optics
  An external ballistics package for Pocket PC, Palm Pilots and Windows. No price that I can see.
• On Target Software
  'Windows based computer program for rifle, handgun, and shotgun shooters and reloaders.' $49.95-$69.95. [NOTE: This is in no way associated with the software, On Target!, which I used to sell.]
• Point Blank
  ...a Windows PC Ballistics and Reloading program. Free!
• PRODAS
  Prodas, PROjectile Design and Analysis System. A professional system used by many countries. I cannot find a price anywhere -- I have been told it is about $6000.
• Projektil 2
  Freeware ballistics program from Reinhard Becker.
• qBal
  'qBal Ballistics Simulator is a full feature external ballistics calculator software for shooter enthusiasts and hunters. qBal offers high precision ballistics calculation, with an interface that was designed from the beginning to be simple to use. Freeware ballistics program from Reinhard Becker.' $5.
• QuickTARGET and QuickLOAD
  External (QuickTARGET) and internal (QuickLOAD) ballistics programs. You can read more about it here.
• RCBS.Load
  RCBS' new program. The guys at GMDR have provided some nice graphs and drawings from their bullet design program: 168 gn Int., bullet and Stability, 338 Millard case drawing, and 75 gn VMax. The software is now available on CD-ROM.
• Recreational Software Inc.
  Ballistics, Reloading and Recreational software for Macintosh and Windows.
• Rob's Reloading Organizer.
  Reloading and ballistics software from Sweden. Price is $30 USD.

  A new, free ballistics program for Unix and Windows. It is distributed under the GNU public license. Distributed as a compilable 'C' program, or in Python.

  Ballistic calculator for Mac OS X. It appears to be free.

Download and Unpack Installation Files

The Pentaho BA Server software, data files, and examples are stored in pre-packaged .war and .zip files. These files need to be manually placed into the correct directories.

Download Files

Download the following installation and plug-in files from the Pentaho Customer Support Portal in the manual build folder.

Unpack Files

1. Unzip the BA Server Installation file.
2. To unpack the file, run install.sh. The IZPak window appears.

If you are unpacking the file in a non-graphical environment, open a Terminal or Command Prompt and type java -jar installer.jar -console and follow the instructions presented in the window.

3. Read the license agreement, select I accept the terms of this license agreement, and click Next.
4. In the Select the installation path text box, enter the place where you want to create the pentaho directory, then click Next.
5. A message indicating that a target directory will be created appears. Click OK.
6. When the installation progress is complete, click Quit.

Put Files in Directories

1. Navigate to the pentaho directory where you unpacked the files, unzip the zip files and place their contents in the appropriate directories listed below.

Do the following for each of the plugin files.

Verify Directory Structure

Verify that the files have been placed in the following places by comparing the following directory structure with yours.

If your web application server is not in the pentahoserverbiserver-ee directory, the pentaho.war and pentaho-style.war files should appear where you've chosen to install your web application server.

Set the PENTAHO_JAVA_HOME and PENTAHO_INSTALLED_LICENSE_PATH environment variables. If you do not set these variables, Pentaho will not start correctly.

If you are using a JRE, set the JRE_HOME home environment variable as well.

1. Set the path of the PENTAHO_JAVA_HOME variable to the path of your Java installation, like this.
2. Set the path of the PENTAHO_INSTALLED_LICENSE_PATH variable to the path of the installed licenses, like this.
3. Log out and in again, then verify the variables have been properly set.

Complete the instructions in this section only if you have a headless node or if you plan to install on a Mac OS.

Prepare a Headless Linux or Solaris Server

There are two headless server scenarios that require special procedures on Linux and Solaris systems. One is for a system that has no video card; the other is for a system that has a video card, but does not have an X server installed. In some situations -- particularly if your server doesn't have a video card -- you will have to perform both procedures to properly generate reports with the BA Server.

Systems without video cards

The java.awt.headless option enables systems without video output and/or human input hardware to execute operations that require them. To set this application server option when the BA Server starts, you will need to modify the startup scripts for either the BA Server, or your Java application server. You do not need to do this now, but you will near the end of these instruction when you perform the Start BA Server step. For now, add the following item to the list of CATALINA_OPTS parameters: -Djava.awt.headless=true.

The entire line should look something like this:

If you intend to create a BA Server service control script, you must add this parameter to that script's CATALINA_OPTS line.

If you do not have an X server installed, you must also follow the below instructions.

Systems without X11

To generate charts, the Pentaho Reporting engine requires functionality found in X11. If you are unwilling or unable to install an X server, you can install the xvfb package instead. xvfb provides X11 framebuffer emulation, which performs all graphical operations in memory instead of sending them to the screen.

Adjust Amount of Memory Mac OS Allocates for PostgreSQL

If you plan to install the software on a Mac OS, and you choose to use PostgreSQL, you need to increase the amount of memory that the Mac OS allocates for PostgreSQL. You can skip these instructions if you plan to install the software on Windows or Linux.

PostgreSQL is the name of the default database that contains audit, schedule and other data that you create. PostgreSQL starts successfully only if your computer has allocated enough memory. Go to http://www.postgresql.org/docs/devel/static/kernel-resources.html and follow the instructions there on how to adjust the memory settings on your computer.
